This historical landmark which was established
in 1892 is the best halfway stop at the top of Van Reenen’s Pass and is just 1
km off the N3. Recently restored and steeped in history they offer varied
accommodation options with all their rooms being comfortable and spacious. You
can book online or call them direct on
058 671 0027. The Green Lantern Inn is currently owned by Bill and
Gail Ross-Adams and was named after the large green lantern that was hung from
a pole at the top of the new pass. This was used to indicate to motorists that
they had reached the summit, especially in the heavy mist that Van Reenen is
known for. The Green Lantern has been around for over 130 years starting as a
famous rest stop along the wagon route between JHB & DBN to being the headquarters
during the Boer War.
They cater for weddings between 20-80 guests and
host special themed parties, business conferences, reunions and can cater for
other celebrations up to 140 people. This
venue has a restaurant which is open all day for travellers and guests. It also
has a beautifully manicured English Country Garden and has a safe playground
for the kiddies with hotel bunnies and chickens and the most famous resident of
all – a donkey called “Bojangles”. With
their famous pub just 20 m across the border and serving thirsty travellers
since 1932 the famous Halfway Noggin Pub is a must to visit as well. The bar
counter is made from Burmese Teak and was obtained from the Harrismith Standard
Bank in the early 1930’s. “Bojangles” is a regular visitor in the Pub too.
